Mr. Doppler
I must confess. I really like the blog. It has opened a layer of communication that I had yet to tap into, so it through this medium that I ask you to complete one final entry.
I know there are many factors involved in becoming successful. But I am reminded of two in this moment. (1) Surround yourself with creative, positive, potential-filled people. (2) Reflection - the purposeful stopping in the present to consider the past leads to growth opportunities that are missed without that very purposeful pause.
I am asking you to engage in the latter (the pause).
In your first labeled section, I would like you to write about what you have done this year. To be specific, tell me about assignments you completed, literature read, ideas studies, anything you remember working on throughout the year. GIVE me details - titles, specific topics, the more the better!
In the second section I would like you to give a very honest account of the time, effort and energy you spent preparing for English class.
In the final section you get a shot at old Baltazar. Let me know what you thought of my style, delivery, expectations, organization (calendars), planning - kinds of assignments. Don’t fear the reaper, you can level with me. I have never been anything but honest with you, I would expect nothing less in return. I want to add one thing. I would love to hear what advice you might have for me. Yeah, that’s right, an old dog looking for new tricks.
Thanks for taking the time to complete this!

Gym Candy by Carl Dueker
Tough topic of steroids handled very diplomatically. Loved how Mom and Dad weren’t perfect and how he came to terms with that concept. The author did an excellent job of explaining how he slid into using and then….. Well I think guys and girls would both enjoy reading this.

Deadline by Chris Crutcher
Deadline was a book that made you think throughout. The premise is pretty serious and he had an odd way of taking the adults out of the situation. His mom had mental health issues, that didn’t have a happy ending. His crisis and the way he handled it was phenomenal. Some adult language and content.

Sea Wolf by Jack London
Our book club is reading this or I never would have picked it up. I do not know how I feel about it either. Seems to be really a guy story, but I do feel compelled to keep reading to see what happens next. The seal clubbing makes me ill, but I seem to not think about that when I am having a hamburger. I have gotten sea sick in a few parts and wondered about the violence of those sea going men. No wonder they got scurvy…

The Book of Everything by Guus Kuijer
This book is an unusual book. It is a book that has been translated from its original Dutch. It is written about a 9-year-old boy named Thomas that is living in Amsterdam in the 1950’s. At this point Amsterdam is still recovering from Nazi occupation. Thomas’s father is a very cruel and abusive man. This story is how Thomas overcomes his fear of his father. His mother, sister, aunt, and next-door neighbor help him.
This book is unusual. I don’t know if I liked it or not. I haven’t decided. It deals with abuse and the stresses of it in an unusual way. Try it, you might find you like it better than I did.
